Noyes makes use of several poetic techniques in ‘The Highwayman’. Sometimes Noyes uses anapaests and sometimes he uses iambs. There are six sets of two beats per line, known as hexameter. The sestets follow a simple rhyme scheme of AABCCB, changing end sounds from stanza to stanza as the poet saw fit.
